How to care for your NHS uniform

Properly caring for your NHS uniform has rarely been more critical.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a constant high-level threat to patients and colleagues. Therefore, a clean and defect-free uniform provides the first step towards adequate infection prevention and control.

To help slow the spread of infection during the pandemic, many NHS trusts have changed how staff uniforms are washed.

In many Hospitals & trusts, onsite laundries are now only used for uniforms soiled with highly contentious substances (e.g. surgical gowns), and all other garments should be washed at home.

That’s why Wipeout Creations Embroidery has put together this guide to help staff understand how to properly care for their NHS uniforms.

How should you clean your NHS uniform at home?

Washing your uniform at home isn’t much different from washing any other garments. However, for best results, the NHS recommends:

  • Washing with detergents at 30ºC will remove most Gram-positive microorganisms, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
  • Our NHS Fleece Jackets & Hoodies Can be washed up to 60ºC
  • A ten-minute wash at 60ºC is enough to remove almost all microorganisms.
  • Washing uniforms separately from other clothing items is beneficial.
